A journey of self-discovery for a black trans woman in Brazil.

Following a year in the life of student and Gaelic learner Loretta Crinall as she leaves her home in Glasgow and makes her way to the largest city in South America, Sao Paulo, as part of her languages degree. Having recently left her career as a drag performer, Loretta is now embarking on a journey to an unknown country, with all the challenges that come with it.

Being a minority language scholar and activist, Loretta uses this trip to conduct in-depth research on the region’s indigenous people. On the Jaragua Mountain on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, she meets the Guarani people, who have lived there for centuries. In a conversation with Anthony Kara’i Poty, Loretta hears how the Guarani have fought to defend their way of life against violence and ignorance.

This journey also gives Loretta the opportunity to look back on her life growing up as a black trans woman and the impact that has had on her, both personally and politically. Set amidst the stunning landscapes of Brazil, the programme shows Loretta as she navigates new languages and culture at a time of great change in her life.
